Economic motives — securing raw materials, favorable trade terms, and captive markets for industrial goods — drove imperial expansion into Africa and Asia between 1875 and 1900 to a very large extent, and while officials frequently dressed that expansion in the language of civilization, religion, or national prestige, the actual content of the agreements imperial powers signed and enforced was almost always about who could trade, extract, and profit, not who could convert or civilize.
By the 1870s, industrial economies in Western Europe, the United States, and Japan had built factories that needed both cheap raw materials and reliable overseas markets to keep growing, a need that new steel, steamship, and telegraph technology now made it logistically possible to satisfy on a global scale. The resulting competition among industrialized states for territory and economic access is what historians call the Scramble for Africa and the broader carving of China into treaty ports and spheres of influence.
The clearest evidence sits in the treaties themselves. The Treaty of Nanjing that ended the First Opium War forced China to open Canton, Amoy, Foochow-fu, Ningpo, and Shanghai to British merchants (Document 2) — a purely commercial demand, not a request for converts or subjects, extracted from China by a British negotiator writing in the voice of a victorious military power dictating terms to a defeated one, which explains why the treaty's language concerns ports and mercantile access rather than governance or religion. Six decades later, John Hay's Open Door Note pursued functionally the same goal through a different method: rather than seizing a Chinese port outright, Hay asked rival powers to guarantee that all nations would "enjoy perfect equality of treatment for their commerce and navigation" within each other's spheres of influence (Document 5). Hay wrote as the chief diplomat of a country arriving too late to claim a sphere of its own, and his purpose was to protect American merchants' access to a market other powers were already dividing among themselves — proof that even a policy remembered for defending China's sovereignty was in fact a rival power's economic maneuver, not a moral objection to imperialism itself.
The Congo Free State supplies the starkest case of economic motive overriding every other stated justification. Officially organized as a humanitarian and civilizing project, the territory was in practice run to extract rubber for the booming European and American demand created by bicycle and, soon after, automobile tires, a demand enforced through village quotas backed by mutilation and killing when a village failed to deliver enough rubber. George Washington Williams, an American lawyer and journalist who personally traveled through the Congo before writing his open letter, told Leopold directly that his charges rested on "a careful study and inspection of the country" (Document 4) rather than secondhand rumor — a detail worth noting because it signals Williams was writing as an eyewitness confronting a sitting monarch, not a distant polemicist, exactly the kind of firsthand, adversarial sourcing that makes his account difficult to dismiss. Williams's letter shows that even a colony explicitly founded, on paper, for the natives' "moral and material well-being" functioned in practice as an economic extraction machine whose human cost its own founding rhetoric did nothing to prevent.
The documents that speak loudest about civilization and morality turn out, on inspection, to be doing quieter economic work. Kipling's poem, published as American forces fought to hold the Philippines, urged readers to "bind your sons to exile / To serve your captives' need" (Document 1) — language that recast a war fought partly over Pacific trade access as a noble sacrifice made on the colonized peoples' behalf, precisely the framing a colonizing public needed if it was going to accept the costs of an economically motivated war without asking who actually profited from it. The General Act of the Berlin Conference makes an almost identical move on paper: European delegates who spent the conference dividing African territory among themselves, without a single African representative present, nonetheless pledged to "watch over the preservation of the native tribes" and their "moral and material well-being" (Document 3) — a humanitarian clause written into the very document whose real business was assigning exclusive commercial and territorial claims to each attending power, suggesting the moral language existed to make an economic land grab presentable rather than to constrain it.
None of this means economic motive was the only force at work, and two of the documents complicate a purely economic reading. Wovoka's teaching that a new world was coming and that his followers should not fear when "the earth shakes" (Document 6) reflects a spiritual, not economic, understanding of what settler expansion meant to the Indigenous peoples living through it, a reminder that colonized peoples themselves often experienced and resisted imperialism in terms that had nothing to do with commerce at all. The Boxers' slogan to "support the Qing, destroy the foreign" (Document 7) likewise targeted foreign political and religious presence in China as much as foreign trade, showing that resistance to imperialism, and the great-power rivalry driving imperialism itself, involved national and cultural stakes beyond raw economic calculation; Ethiopia's 1896 victory over Italy at Adwa, for instance, is best explained by a contest over strategic standing and diplomatic recognition among European rivals as much as by any single commodity Italy hoped to extract from the region. Economic motive was still the dominant, recurring thread running through the documents' actual operative language — treaty ports, equal commercial treatment, rubber quotas — but it operated alongside, and was reinforced by, ideological cover and great-power rivalry rather than acting entirely alone.

Between 1750 and 1900, peoples confronting industrialized empires had genuinely different tools available to them — massed armies, religious prophecy, or the deliberate construction of a rival state — and this essay argues that conventional military resistance backed by outside diplomatic or material support, as in Ethiopia's 1896 victory over Italy, was far more likely to preserve a society's sovereignty than religiously organized resistance, as practiced by the Xhosa of southern Africa, which tended to leave the resisting community weaker than before it began, even though both strategies could inflict genuine, humiliating setbacks on the imperial power they targeted.
By the 1880s, European governments had gained two advantages earlier generations of would-be conquerors never possessed: quinine, which let soldiers and administrators survive long stretches in disease-heavy tropical regions, and repeating rifles, which gave even small European garrisons a firepower advantage no African or Asian army could yet match industrially. The Scramble for Africa that followed compressed decades of piecemeal contact into a single, brutally fast wave of conquest, and it was against this specific combination of medical and military advantage that colonized peoples had to improvise a response.
Conventional battlefield resistance produced two very different results depending on what stood behind the armies involved. Zulu forces destroyed a British column at Isandlwana in 1879 through disciplined maneuver and superior local knowledge of the terrain, a genuine tactical triumph — but Britain simply returned with reinforcements the Zulu Kingdom had no way to match, and within months British dominance over the region was assured regardless of what had happened at Isandlwana. Ethiopia's experience under Emperor Menelik II ran along the same military logic to an opposite outcome: Menelik had already spent years consolidating a unified, well-armed state before Italy invaded, and when Italian forces attacked in 1896 they met an army reinforced by rifles obtained with Russian and French backing, resulting in a decisive Ethiopian victory at the Battle of Adwa that forced Italy to recognize Ethiopian independence outright. The difference was not the courage or tactical skill of the armies involved — both fought well — but whether a single victory could be followed by the reinforcement and diplomatic recognition needed to make it permanent.
Religiously organized resistance took a different route to a strikingly similar, disappointing result. Following a young prophet's vision that slaughtering Xhosa cattle and abandoning the season's planting would cause ancestral spirits to rise and drive British settlers into the sea, Xhosa communities in southern Africa destroyed their own herds in the 1850s — and when the promised deliverance never came, the famine that followed did more damage to Xhosa society and its capacity to resist British expansion than any single military campaign had. The Ghost Dance movement among Indigenous peoples of the western United States followed a comparable spiritual logic a generation later, promising through ritual and prophecy that settlers would vanish and ancestral lands and ways of life would be restored; like the Xhosa cattle-killing, it offered no material military advantage against an expanding settler state and ultimately failed to reverse the loss of Indigenous land and autonomy it was meant to undo. Both movements show that resistance framed as spiritual renewal could mobilize genuine mass conviction without providing the tools needed to counter an industrialized opponent's material advantages.
These two comparisons should not be flattened into a single rule that military resistance simply worked while religious resistance simply failed, however. China's Boxer Rebellion at the turn of the century complicates any tidy division: it began as a popular, quasi-religious movement whose adherents believed themselves protected from foreign bullets, yet it also drew eventual backing from the Qing government itself, blending prophecy-driven mobilization with state military power in a single episode — and it still ended in defeat, showing that state backing alone did not guarantee the same success Ethiopia achieved. Ethiopia's outcome, moreover, depended on a specific and not easily repeated combination of circumstances — a state Menelik had already unified before the invasion, and foreign arms and diplomatic sympathy that most colonized peoples of the period never received — so Adwa is best read as evidence that outside support and prior political consolidation mattered as much as the choice of military resistance itself, not proof that any people who simply chose to fight rather than pray could have matched Ethiopia's result.

(a) Social Darwinism served as a separate rationale: by recasting Darwin's account of biological evolution as a law supposedly governing entire human societies, imperial powers could present conquest as an inevitable natural outcome rather than as a policy chosen for national profit, which spared officials from having to defend the material self-interest actually driving the same expansion Kipling's poem romanticizes.
(b) Quinine's spread as an effective treatment and preventive for malaria let European soldiers, officials, and settlers survive extended periods in tropical Africa, a region disease had kept largely closed to prolonged European presence; paired with more accurate rifles and artillery, quinine converted the interior of the continent from unreachable to conquerable within a few decades.
(c) The Xhosa cattle-killing movement of the 1850s met the kind of expansion Kipling praised in a strikingly different register: acting on a young prophet's vision, Xhosa communities destroyed their own cattle herds and left fields unsown, believing ancestral spirits would then rise and drive British settlers into the sea, but when the promised deliverance never came, the resulting famine did more damage to Xhosa society and its capacity to resist British expansion than any single military campaign had.

(a) Congo rubber is the sharpest example: as bicycle and, later, automobile tires and other industrial rubber goods created surging demand in Europe and the United States, King Leopold II's Congo Free State extracted rubber from the region's forests through village quotas enforced with mutilation and killing for non-compliance, turning an industrial raw-material need into one of the era's worst humanitarian catastrophes.
(b) After the First Opium War, the Treaty of Nanjing forced China to open designated treaty ports, cede Hong Kong, and grant foreign nationals extraterritoriality, yet China's own emperor and government remained formally in place throughout; British India, by contrast, passed after the 1857 Rebellion into direct administration by the British Crown itself, with British officials replacing rather than merely constraining a sovereign government.
(c) Latin American states borrowed heavily from British banks and investors to finance the railroads and ports needed to move export commodities to world markets, and the resulting debt obligations gave foreign creditors real leverage over these governments' economic decisions — a form of control historians call informal empire, achieved through financial dependence rather than through a treaty imposed at gunpoint or a colonial administration installed on the ground.

(a) A push factor was rapid population growth in Europe, which roughly doubled over the nineteenth century from about 188 million in 1800 to 400 million by 1900, outpacing the available agricultural land and urban jobs in many regions and pressuring people to leave. A pull factor was the availability of wage labor and land in destination regions such as the Americas, along with the presence of an existing community of relatives or countrymen already settled there who could help a new arrival find work and housing.
(b) Migration produced ethnic enclaves in receiving societies, such as Chinatowns that formed in cities across the United States or Italian neighborhoods that formed in Buenos Aires, where migrants could continue to worship, eat, and do business much as they had at home. These enclaves were not simply isolated; the food, language, and religious practices within them frequently diffused outward and influenced the broader receiving society over time.
(c) Because migration in this period was disproportionately male, with men leaving to find wage labor abroad while their families remained behind, women in some sending communities took on expanded responsibility for household management and community affairs to fill the gap left by an absent male relative. This expansion of women's authority was not universal, however, since some families delayed a man's departure until another male relative was available to take over his role, leaving existing gender roles largely unchanged in those cases.
